Always call 911 in an emergency

Skilled hands. Cool heads. Caring hearts.

Become a Volunteer

PVA welcomes all who are interested in becoming a part of our family, regardless of prior experience, to apply for membership. Our primary focus is in providing high-quality patient-centered care to those in need. We recognize you may wish to help, but not in providing medical services to patients. PVA is also looking for volunteers to assist with administrative duties, help with special programs, and to provide the community with expanded services.

Benefits of volunteering with PVA:

  • Opportunities to learn and develop emergency medical skills in a dynamic pre-hospital care environment
  • Hands-on experience providing meaningful and significant service to the people of our community
  • Reimbursement for the successful completion of the Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) course
  • Eligibility for a NYS Income Tax Credit as an EMS volunteer
  • Contacts and experiences which often form the foundation of a life-long career in medicine

Roles

Members of PVA fill a variety of roles, each important to our success in serving the Pittsford community. The primary roles are described below; please contact us if you would like additional information on these roles, or for information on other opportunities

EMT

EMTs must complete the following training programs prior to clearing:

  • NYS EMT-B – members are sponsored by PVA
  • CPR for the Professional Rescuer (provided by PVA)
  • HIPAA Awareness Training (provided by PVA)
  • Incident Command System (ICS) training (provided online through FEMA)
  • Bloodborne Pathogens Awareness (provided by PVA)
  • Hazardous Materials Awareness training (online)
  • Orientation and operational competency evaluations prior to independent practice

All EMT candidates must be 18 years of age or older. Training and competency evaluations for new EMTs may take up to 6-9 months.

Paramedic

Paramedics provide advanced level care, including administering medications and limited invasive medical interventions. EMT training and skill is the foundation for Paramedic practice, and therefore each candidate to become a Paramedic must have completed training and be certified as an EMT. For information about Paramedic training, please contact our Training Manager at [email protected]

Current Paramedics must demonstrate proof of certification, complete orientation to our service, and demonstrate competency.

Base Coordinators

Base Coordinators are required to complete the following training programs:

  • CPR and AED
  • HIPAA Awareness Training (provided by PVA)
  • Incident Command System (ICS) training (provided online through FEMA
  • Bloodborne Pathogens Awareness (provided by PVA)
  • Additional training as assigned
Community Director
As a community-based healthcare organization, PVA seeks members of our community to serve on our Board of Directors. If you are interested in learning more about Directorship opportunities, please contact us. Our organization will benefit from your personal and professional expertise!

Time Commitment

All active members, including those in training, are required to meet minimum service-hour requirements. For volunteers, we anticipate 20 hours of service each month. Minimum service expectations for employees are outlined in the employment contract. All members are encouraged to work consistently, especially while training, to maintain proficiency with their medical skills.

To meet the training timelines, new EMTs and Paramedics should anticipate a higher level of commitment in order to be successful.

Pittsford Volunteer Ambulance invests in the success of our new members in training. We seek members who are as committed as we are. If you are interested in learning more about the rewarding opportunities currently available, contact us at [email protected].

How do I apply?

To apply for a volunteer position, please view our open opportunities.

Note: Applicants for membership in PVA must be at least 18 years old. Applicants younger than 18 should refer to our Junior Member Program.

Training Process and Other Questions

For questions about the training process, requirements, certifications or time commitment, please email our Training Manager at [email protected].
